Fly Fishing in Ireland

Fly fishermen have been catching trout and salmon from Ireland's abundant rivers and loughs for centuries. The brown trout, or Breac Donn as it's known in Gaelic, is native to these lands and can be found in almost every river and lough in the country. This site will provide useful information on fishing conditions, rivers, lakes and hatching flies to help you better prepare for your angling adventure.

The Flies of Ireland store, which accompanies this site, contains many of the flies listed on the hatch charts. Speciality flies are available individually, in wet and dry collections or in a complete Flies of Ireland collection. Bulk orders are also available on request.

The Irish trout fishing season generally runs from mid-February through September, but can vary from one fishery to another. Licenses are not required but a fishing permit, as issued by the owner or lease holder of the land gives the holder the right to fish for set periods ranging from a day to a season. Information about season opening and closing dates and permits can be obtained from the local fisheries board.
